FAQ

General Questions

Why are you called Simple Alchemy Co?

Don't worry. It's not because we think we can turn based metals into gold. We chose the name as a way of paying homage to the forerunner of the chemistry we use today. CLICK HERE for an interesting Smithsonian article on the topic.

Why did you rebrand?

When we first launched back in 2018, we had very little money, and did our absolute best with what we had. That meant learning Adobe Illustrator on the spot to design our own logo! While we're proud of what we did, we knew we would eventually need professionals. In summer of 2021, we hired Perspektiiv Design Co to bring our ideas to life.

We worked hard to create a brand that is:

• Gender Inclusive
• Inspired by nature
• Eye-catching
• Influenced by vintage apothecary
• Playful and inviting

Needless to say, these aren't the easiest qualities to convey through a brand - especially when we were doing it ourselves! Perspektiiv Design Co was incredible to work with, and we're thrilled with what they created!

General Product Questions

Is everything vegan and cruelty-free?

Yes! We are certified vegan and cruelty-free by both PETA and Leaping Bunny.

Is there lye in your soap?

We get this question fairly often, and the answer may surprise you: Nope! How, you ask? SCIENCE. We use a traditional cold process method to make our soaps. This method utilizes Sodium Hydroxide (i.e. Lye) to saponify the oils. The process changes the chemical composition of the ingredients, and NO LYE remains after the soap has cured. It is PH Balanced, and super gentle. Chagrin Valley Soaps did a nice blog post on this topic HERE.

I have very sensitive skin. Will your soap work for me?

Our soap is made for you. Literally. We here at Simple Alchemy Co also have highly sensitive skin. Col originally started making soap because everything available on the market irritated her skin. The result is our superior quality, highly conditioning, remarkably simple soap. Our customers have had excellent results, including those with eczema, keratosis pilaris, psoriasis, oily, and combination skin types.

Does your Natural Deodorant really work?

We did extensive research, batch testing, and customer trials to ensure that our Natural Deodorant would work for everyone. And it was worth every minute! It's our best seller by far, and we're sure you'll love it. For best results, follow the instructions on the packaging. Bonus: you can always try it for a few weeks, and if you're not 100% happy you can contact us for a refund.

I want to buy your Pain Relief Balm. Where is it?

It's still here! We just simplified the name to Relief Balm. You can purchase it HERE.

Is your soap biodegradable?

Yes! Extremely. It’s completely safe to use out in nature. It’s totally edible too, so you don’t have to worry about kids or pets getting in their mouths. We’re not saying it will taste great, but it’s entirely safe. Once when Col when camping, a bird stole her soap off the picnic table. Twice!

Is your soap septic safe?

Yes! We're on a septic system too

Do you have any coconut-free products?

We're so sorry we don't have more to offer folks with coconut allergy! Our only coconut-free product is our Shave Bar, which is made with pure Olive Oil.

Do you have any nut-free products?

We do! We use Shea Butter in most of our products, and while it is technically a tree nut, Shea doesn't contain the specific proteins responsible for triggering nut allergies. Also, our Solid Dish Soap doesn't contain any nuts! Soapnuts are actually a berry in the Lychee family.

Is everything plastic-free?

Absolutely! It's incredibly important to us to be a completely plastic-free company. We make sure all of our packaging can be recycled, composted, and reused.

Solid Dish Soap Questions

Is it nut-free?

Yes! We use Soapnut powder (a natural detergent) to create the beautiful speckles, but Soapnuts are actually a berry. They're in the Lychee family, and fully safe for anyone with a nut allergy.

Is it coconut-free?

Unfortunately, we aren't able to make a coconut-free Solid Dish Soap. Coconut oil is a vital ingredients for creating a long-lasting soap with high cleansing properties and great lather. Our apologies! We wish we had a coconut-free option for you.

Can you make a sink full of sudsy water with it?

Yes! Simply stop up your sink, and run warm/hot water as usual. Hold a side of the soap under the faucet, and build up a lather using your hand or a brush. The bubbles will flow into the water and give you all the suds you need.

Does it leave a weird residue on everything?

We worked really hard to formulate our solid dish soap in such a way that it doesn't leave a strange film on all your dishes! If you have hard water like we do, you know that even plain water can leave spots on your glassware. If there's anything we want to be totally spotless, we rinse in super hot water and dry promptly.

How does it compare to Dawn for cutting grease?

In our side-by-side comparisons, we've found our Solid Dish Soap to be completely on-par with Dawn in terms of grease cutting. But if you need the convenience of a squeeze bottle, liquid soap can still be your go-to! We like to keep both on hand for different applications.

Will it dry out my hands?

No! This was one of the most important factors for us when developing Solid Dish Soap. We both have extremely sensitive skin (Hyper-mobile Ehlers Danlos Syndrome makes our skin super fragile), and only a small countertop dishwasher. We spend a lot of time handwashing at the sink, and our soap is very friendly to easily-irritated skin. We attribute that to our specific blend of oils!

Does it work with hard water?

Yep! We have very hard water as well.

Is it septic safe?

You betcha! We're on a septic system too.
